An e-mail I received from an individual about a kind milkman named Elmer.

As a young boy 11-12 years (1943-44) i worked with Elmer the milkman. I lived at the bottom of Bourgeois St. and had to meet him at Centre & W Wellington Sts to begin our route which was Sevastopol to Fortune. I must have started very early because as you know they started at the break of dawn. They had to hook up the horse and wagon, load up the wagon and head out along Wellington under the tunnel. I believe i was paid either a quarter or 50 cents for my efforts.Plus i was responsible for feeding the horse. It was not a long day because we dropped of many a quart, lbs of butter(rationed in those days) to the many very large families along the route. I think Elmer shared his lunch with this very poor kid from the point. There were 9 kids in our family and the monies earned were always handed over to mom.
